Robben Island - Public Heritage Programmes Robben Island Museum is described as the ’university of life’ for it is here where strategies for a future society based on tolerance, respect and non-racialism were nurtured and implemented by political prisoners. The emphasis on education, debate, and on lifelong learning is a testimony to the fight for justice and education, and is a key to Robben Island’s role as a heritage site and its human rights discourse. Robben Island Museum Education department is mandated to exercise considerable responsibility to interpret, curate and conserve this tangible and intangible heritage. This exercise is done through carefully researched programs, directed at different audience groups with different learning abilities.  Schools Tours Schools Tours programme is aimed at creating an exciting and stimulating learning experience for children and young people who visit the Robben Island Museum. For most school children this is a-lifetime experience. This programme highlights the importance of the Robben Island Museum heritage. (Please use your school letterhead)  Outreach Programme In 2010, a new stage play was be introduced. This is going to be more vibrant musical drama and choreography. The play is a perfect piece of edutainment, telling the story of Robben Island, from the political imprisonment time, to date, when it operates as the museum, and the World Heritage Site. The play is staged at the Nelson Mandela Gateway Auditorium, and the tickets are available at the ticket sales office.  Robben Island Independent Camps International and national organizations can apply to use the MPLC to facilitate theme driven camps. These camps are of commercial nature and RIM will advertise availability of accommodations and facilities at the MPLC on its Web site and through other media. There will be selection criteria to ensure that the camps address the issues of human rights and responsibility and reflect the spirit of the RIM vision and mission.  Nation Building Youth Camps Nation building is defined as an activity or sets of activities that will develop a sense of citizenship in young people based on a culture of human rights and responsibilities.
