Robben Island Museum (RIM) was established in 1997. Robben Island was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. It has also been declared: - A South African National Monument in 1996
- A National Museum in 1996
- An Associated institution of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology in 1997
- A National Heritage Site in 2006
